Squaw Valley is the name of the world famous ski area in the Sierra mountain community of Olympic Valley, California. Squaw Valley is also the name the locals use for this magical valley. The construction on the first phase of the Village, First Ascent, started in June of 2000 and the first occupancy of the homes was on New Years eve of 2001. The construction on the second phase, 22 Station, was started in the summer of 2002 and completed in 2004. In late 2010 the Squaw Valley ski area was purchased by KSL Capital Partners of Denver, CO. That purchase also included all of Intrawest's interest in the Village at Squaw Valley - the commercial space and the rental management. KSL plans to spend $50,000,000 on the Squaw Valley ski area over the next 3 - 5 years. In September of 2011 they announced that had purchased Alpine Meadows ski area and the two resorts would be run by the same company. Squaw Valley season pass holders and Alpine Meadows season pass holders now have use of both properties as do day ticket guests. There currently is a shuttle service every 20 minutes between both areas.
Squaw Valley is also home to the Resort at Squaw Creek, a ski in/ski out, four-star destination hotel located at the east edge of the Squaw Valley ski area. Over the years, the hotel has earned a reputation as the preferred destination resort hotel for Squaw Valley and the North Tahoe area putting it on the Conde Nast Traveler magazine's list of the top 30 resorts in North America. The Resort at Squaw Creek offers a rare combination of four-star hotel amenities, such as valet parking, a full-service spa, fine dining, room service, ice-skating rink, tennis courts, heated pools and water slide, fitness center and convention facilities. There is also a small mall for boutique shopping. The property is uniquely situated on the edge of a beautiful mountain meadow, at the base of a ski lift, with direct access to Squaw Valley and a network of scenic hiking and cross country ski trails which are transformed in the summer, to an 18-hole Robert Trent Jones Jr. championship golf course.
